ACI-ASTM CA28MWV (J91422) Cast Stainless Steel

ACI-ASTM CA28MWV steel is a martensitic stainless steel formulated for casting. Cited properties are appropriate for the heat treated (HT) condition. CA28MWV is the designation in both the ACI and ASTM systems for this material. J91422 is the UNS number.

It has the highest electrical conductivity among cast martensitic stainless steels. In addition, it has the highest embodied energy and a fairly low ductility.

The graph bars on the material properties cards below compare ACI-ASTM CA28MWV steel to: cast martensitic stainless steels (top), all iron alloys (middle), and the entire database (bottom). A full bar means this is the highest value in the relevant set. A half-full bar means it's 50% of the highest, and so on.

Alloy Composition

Among cast stainless steels, the composition of ACI-ASTM CA28MWV steel is notable for including vanadium (V) and tungsten (W). Vanadium has a strong hardening effect, but this effect is particularly sensitive to the type of tempering. Tungsten interacts with other alloying elements to a greater extent than usual, which makes it hard to broadly characterize its effects.

Iron (Fe)Fe 81.4 to 85.8
Chromium (Cr)Cr 11 to 12.5
Molybdenum (Mo)Mo 0.9 to 1.3
Tungsten (W)W 0.9 to 1.3
Manganese (Mn)Mn 0.5 to 1.0
Nickel (Ni)Ni 0.5 to 1.0
Silicon (Si)Si 0 to 1.0
Vanadium (V)V 0.2 to 0.3
Carbon (C)C 0.2 to 0.28
Phosphorus (P)P 0 to 0.030
Sulfur (S)S 0 to 0.030

All values are % weight. Ranges represent what is permitted under applicable standards.
