Base Metal Price

A measure of the relative cost of different metals, based on the commodity market prices of their alloy constituents. Values are calculated on a unit mass basis, and expressed as a percentage of the highest value in the database.

The choice of units is meant to highlight the property's role as a means of comparison, and not a tool for cost estimation. The final costs of a particular project vary dramatically with concerns that are far beyond the scope of this database. This property was specifically designed to be consistent between alloys. Units such as $/kg or €/kg might run the additional risk of creating the impression that we are quoting a price, which is absolutely not the case.

Values are not updated frequently, and therefore may not capture short-term fluctuations.
